Undergraduate Director's Message

We, the faculty, are very excited that you have chosen Materials Science and Engineering as your major. It is a great pleasure welcoming you to our department which will be your home-away-from-home in the next three years. Above all, you have become a member of the Rutgers MSE family –a bond that will continue beyond your graduation. We pride ourselves on being an egalitarian, diverse, inclusive, and agreeable close-knit group of Rutgers Materials Scientists and Engineers who endeavor to make the world a better place. Our MSE family is dispersed to all four corners of this nation and around the world, making a difference in peoples’ lives every day.

MSE is a department with an exceptionally favorable student-to-faculty ratio. As such, we will learn your name, address you as such, and treat you as a soon-to-be fellow Rutgers Scientist and Engineer from the beginning. You will receive outstanding personal attention, mentoring, and guidance from the MSE faculty who will help you succeed not only in your coursework but also in chartering a prolific career path for yourselves. Rest assured that we will support you in any way we possibly can during your journey in Rutgers MSE.

We are dedicated to providing you with a top-notch and world-class science & engineering education in materials.  Accordingly, we designed a curriculum for you that strikes a balance between theoretical in-class instructions and hands-on learning in state-of-the-art laboratories. We created an intellectually stimulating environment for learning and professional preparation in which you will be taught and trained by world-renown and award-winning faculty. You will be encouraged and supported by the MSE faculty to participate in their research projects early in your sophomore year. Thusly, you will gain very important technical experience. We designed an MSE curriculum that is highly customizable for your personal interests and needs. As a result, you will be able to double major or minor in subjects such as physics, computer science, mathematics, and business administration, among others, should you choose to do so. We pursue an educational approach that substantially increases our students’ chances of landing highly coveted jobs upon their graduation. For instance, the MSE faculty will support and guide you in securing internships and co-ops that will increase your odds of employment in your dream jobs significantly. Our graduates are known to rise to leadership positions in industry, government, and academia with whom you will be able to network through various departmental social functions during your tenure with us as an undergraduate student.

I invite you to the Rutgers MSE web page and to follow us in Instagram and LinkedIn where you can gain insights about “your” department.

Please feel free to contact me at eka@soe.rutgers.edu should you have any questions or comments. I will be looking forward to the day we return to campus and meet you all in person; until then, all the best!
