Dr. Peter Schultz, co-inventor of the low-loss optical fiber that enables our worldwide communications network, recently visited MSE and presented an excellent talk entitled, "In Pursuit of Perfect Glass: Fifty Years and Still At It." Included were many details of his professional journey from scientist to business executive, including his transformative invention (along with Don Keck and Bob Maurer) in 1971 that enabled the manufacture and use of low-loss optical fibers for high-bandwidth long-distance telecommunications.

Professor Dunbar Birnie recently received a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support Rutgers' inventions and innovation for the next five years. He will work in collaboration with the Rutgers Office of Research Commercialization, the Rutgers Business School and the Rutgers Entrepreneurship Coalition to nuture Rutgers’ inventions through an NSF I-Corps “Site”. The Rutgers' I-Corp Site will provide mentoring and resources for faculty and student inventors to enhance commercialization prospects for their ideas.

Dr. Jennifer Lynch-Branzoi recently received a $100,000 grant from Rutgers’ TechAdvance Fund for her project titled Graphene Enhanced Polymer Matrix Composites: Investigation of the Barrier Resistance to Small Gases and Fuel. She will investigate the permeation of small gases through graphene nanoflake enhanced polymer matrix composites (G-PMCs). These lightweight, high performance G-PMCs are created by graphite exfoliation into graphene nanoflakes directly within molten polymer.
